The Sustainable Agriculture for Alternative Livelihoods (SAFAL) supported by Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) implemented by BAIF Odisha has empowered 35 members from nine SHGs by introducing mushroom cultivation as a sustainable income-generating activity. Addressing the challenge of limited agricultural diversity, the initiative provided material and knowledge support by government-certified experts, and essential equipment like manual sprayer pumps. With a structured approach, members cultivated 952 kg of paddy straw mushrooms, generating ?2,18,960, and adapted to seasonal changes by transitioning to oyster mushrooms. Future plans include expanding to more SHGs, diversifying mushroom varieties, and strengthening market linkages. This initiative showcases how targeted support and sustainable agricultural practices can drive rural economic upliftment and empowerment.
